Stress is one of the biggest factors that weaken the immune system. Iyengar yoga in general combines physical movement and conscious breathing to bring the body into a state of balance. This reduces the production of stress hormones such as cortisol, which can promote inflammation and impair the immune defence.
Back in 2009, BKS Iyengar developed a special sequence of yoga exercises which, when combined as a group, stimulate blood circulation and support lymphatic flow. The lymphatic system plays a central role in the immune system as it removes waste products and fights pathogens. The asanas that have been put together for the sequence to strengthen the immune system also activate the parasympathetic nervous system (‘rest-and-digest mode’), which helps the body to regenerate. A well-functioning nervous system is essential for an effective immune defence.
Yoga is more than a physical exercise - it’s a tool for managing stress, improving immune function and fostering balance. Here’s how yoga supports your health:
Stress reduction:
Conscious breathing and meditation lower cortisol levels and help the body enter a state of relaxation. Techniques like pranayama calm the nervous system and enhance focus.
Lymphatic stimulation:
Yoga twists and forward bends stimulate the lymphatic system, which is an important factor in removing toxins and fighting infections.
Improved sleep:
Restorative poses like Child’s Pose and Savasana calm mind and body, promoting better sleep.
Kidney strength and vitality:
Healthy kidneys are a vital source of life energy. Yoga practices focused on gentle twists and breathing help strengthen these vital organs, improving long-term resilience.
